Eglwys hynafol St. Tudno (y mae'r dref yn cymryd ei henw ohoni) ar y Gogarth oedd eglwys wreiddiol Llandudno. Fodd bynnag, ym 1839, difrodwyd Eglwys Sant Tudno gan storm enbyd a phenderfynwyd peidio â thrwsio’r eglwys ond yn hytrach adeiladu un newydd yn nes at ganol yr hyn a oedd yn bentref Llandudno ar y pryd. Ym 1840 adeiladwyd Eglwys San Siôr yn Church Walks ac roedd yn gwasanaethu’r boblogaeth Gymraeg yn bennaf. Adferwyd Eglwys Sant Tudno ym 1855 ac mae’n parhau i fod yn addoldy gweithredol o fewn ardal y weinidogaeth.

Erbyn 1860, roedd Llandudno yn datblygu fel canolfan ymwelwyr ffasiynol ac adeiladwyd Eglwys y Drindod Sanctaidd yn y dref newydd i ddarparu ar gyfer y nifer cynyddol o ymwelwyr. Rhoddwyd y tir gan Stad Mostyn, ei phensaer, George Felton, a gynlluniodd yr eglwys a gosodwyd y gonglfaen ym 1865. Cwblhawyd rhan wreiddiol yr eglwys ym 1872 a’i chysegru ym 1874, er na ychwanegwyd y tŵr tan 1892, gyda'r clychau wedi'u gosod y flwyddyn ganlynol. Adeiladwyd yr organ gyntaf yn 1873 ac ychwanegwyd stondinau’r côr ym 1882.

Adeiladwyd y cyntedd gorllewinol ar ddiwedd y 19eg Ganrif pan wnaethpwyd ymdrech i orffen yr adeilad. Mae ganddo do croes gyda ffenestr talcen canol a drysau ystlysu yn erbyn mur gorllewinol yr eglwys.

Ym 1924, dymchwelwyd y festri rhwng transept y gogledd a’r gangell a’i disodli gan y Capel Coffa, a gysegrwyd i’r rhai a fu farw yn y Rhyfel Mawr (Rhyfel Byd I).

Ymestynwyd y gangell 12 troedfedd ym 1932. Y cynllun cychwynnol oedd defnyddio'r un croestoriad â chorff yr eglwys a wal ddwyreiniol fflat newydd. Profodd hynny’n rhy ddrud a pheiriannwyd yr estyniad drwy ailadeiladu’r wal ddwyreiniol grom 12 troedfedd i’r dwyrain a’i llenwi â gwaith maen a thoeau newydd. Cafodd y pâr o ffenestri cangell a dynnwyd pan adeiladwyd y Capel Coffa eu hailosod yn y wal newydd i'r dwyrain o'r organ. Rhoddwyd y reredos cerfiedig i'r allor a phanelu'r cysegr gan yr addolwyr er cof am y Parch FP Watkin-Davies, rheithor rhwng 1925-1933.

Cymerodd y pulpud derw (1952) le pulpud carreg a oedd, cyn 1926, wedi sefyll ar yr ochr ogleddol. Newidiodd y ddarllenfa a'r pulpud safleoedd i roi gwelededd i'r organydd o'r consol organ newydd. Mae siâp hecsagonol yr hen bwlpud i’w weld o hyd yn y llawr.

Daeth Eglwys y Drindod Sanctaidd yn eglwys blwyf yn 2002 ar ôl cau Eglwys San Siôr. Yn 2015, dathlodd y plwyf 150fed pen-blwydd gosod conglfaen y Drindod Sanctaidd.

History of Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church | Eglwys y Drindod Sanctaidd

The ancient church of St. Tudno (from whom the town takes its name) on the Great Orme was the original church of Llandudno. However, in 1839, St. Tudno’s Church was damaged by a severe storm and it was decided not to repair the church but to build a new one nearer the centre of what was then the village of Llandudno. In 1840 St. George’s Church was built in Church Walks and served the mainly Welsh-speaking population. St. Tudno’s Church was restored in 1855 and remains an active place of worship within the ministry area.

By 1860, Llandudno was developing as a fashionable tourist centre and The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the new town to cater for the increasing number of visitors. The land was given by the Mostyn Estate, its architect, George Felton, designed the church and the cornerstone was laid in 1865. The original part of the church was completed in 1872 and consecrated in 1874, though the tower was not added until 1892, with the bells installed the following year. The organ was first built in 1873 and the choir stalls were added in 1882.

The west porch was built at the end of the 19th Century when an effort was made to finish the building. It has has a lean-to roof with a centre-gabled window and flanking doors against the west nave wall.

In 1924, the vestry between the north transept and the chancel was demolished and replaced by the Memorial Chapel, dedicated to those who died in the Great War (World War I).

The chancel was lengthened by 12 feet in 1932. The initial plan had been to use the same cross section as the nave and a new flat east wall. That proved too expensive and the extension was engineered by rebuilding the curved east wall 12 feet to the east and filling in with new masonry and roofing. The pair of chancel windows removed when the Memorial Chapel was built were reinstated into the new wall east of the organ. The carved reredos to the altar and the paneling of the sanctuary were given by the worshippers in memory of the Rev FP Watkin-Davies, rector from 1925-1933.

The oak pulpit (1952) replaced a stone pulpit which, prior to 1926, had stood on the northern side. The lectern and pulpit changed positions to give the organist visibility from the new organ console. The hexagonal shape of the old pulpit can still be seen in the flooring.

Holy Trinity Church became the parish church in 2002 following the closure of St. George's. In 2015, the parish celebrated the150th anniversary of the laying of Holy Trinity's cornerstone.
